lyrics

Concrete Cage

I’m in this concrete cage making minimum wage.
With deep regret, I accept these chains.
I have to make it through the week so I can get paid…
Keep telling myself I’ll get out of here someday.

I’ve watched dreams die right before my eyes.
How much more must we compromise?
How much more can we sacrifice?
I want to life before I die.

It’s a beautiful day as I waste away,
Counting the profit someone else has made.
No one wants to be here and yet we remain,
In this concrete prison, this concrete cage.

This isn’t right.
It’s all so clear.
If this moment is all that we have,
Why am I wasting it here?

I have to make sure my bills are paid on time.
I pay someone for shelter so that I can survive.
I pay them for water, for heat and for light,
When all of these things I can find right outside.

The passerby tell me I should be outside.
The sky is the truest blue it’s been in a while.
Yet I sit at this desk going through files.
I can’t help but feel like I’m wasting my life.

Go to school, get a job, buy a house, have a kid.
So many people telling us how to live.
No one wants to be here and then they forget,
Just why they’ve volunteered themselves for this.
